Definition

The concept of first principles was defined by Aristotle, who described them as the “first basis from which a thing is known.” In other words, first principles are the most basic and fundamental truths or assumptions of a subject, which cannot be deduced from any other principles.

For example, axioms are a type of first principle. They are statements that are accepted as true without need for proof, and therefore serve as the basis for further reasoning and argumentation.

TIP

Euclid’s axiom in geometry that states “Through any two points, there is exactly one straight line.” is an example of a first principle.

Modern Take

In modern times, first principles thinking has become a way of approaching problems in a pursuit of innovation and creativity. It involves breaking down complex problems into their most basic components, and then reassembling them in new and innovative ways.

Innovation often arises from challenging these established assumptions and exploring alternative possibilities.

A successful example of first principles thinking can be seen in the development of SpaceX, where the company challenged the traditional assumptions of the aerospace industry and developed a whole new approach. By breaking down the problem into its most basic components, SpaceX was able to develop reusable rockets and significantly reduce the costs by doing so.

My Take

I have a high tendency to be contrarian, which sometimes bites me back. However, I believe this trait can be channeled positively through first principles thinking. By questioning established assumptions and exploring alternative possibilities, I can approach problems in a more innovative and creative way.

I think combining pragmatism with active questioning of the status quo leads to better solutions. Simply accepting “the way things are” leaves potential improvements undiscovered. The key is knowing when to challenge assumptions and when to accept them—maintaining an open mind while being critical of new ideas.

Ultimately, it’s an endless pursuit of truth and better solutions.
